Some ideas we have at the moment:

1. Solar Panels, etc, to give power and funds.
2. A Rhondda Museum.
3. Boxing Ring + Training Gym, as sport is a part of the Rhondda.
4. Cafeteria - a place for workers to have a break and chat.
5. Website + Internet for the public.
6. Planting shrubs, etc.. for children to have something to do.
7. Classes for helping the unemployed.
8. Another idea in from Ben, in Australia (!)
is a Sports Academy.
9. A lady graduate from Penrhys wants to restart
a Youth Club, and hopes to train girls in basketball.
10. Pat wants to see an "oasis" - somewhere to find peace.
11. A young mother says she'd love an "adventureland"
for very young children.
12. Griff says he'd like to see games like paintball outside.
13. Ivor's suggesting outward bound courses.
14. Richard would like to try growing herbs with hydroponics...
(No - not THAT sort !)

These are just some of the public ideas,
and they're comin' in thick and fast !

Here's a recent news report about the elderly:

Over one million older people say they often
or always feel lonely, a report by Help the Aged states.

The charity finds that over a third of older people,
and HALF of women aged over 65, now live alone.
Half a million only leave their houses once a week
and 300,000 are entirely housebound, the report says.

The charity wants more help for older people and says
many only get to interact with delivery people.
The report blames a variety of reasons:
low incomes, a lack of local services, such a post offices,
and no local community opportunities.

The report says the government should raise the state pension
to a level which allows them to live comfortable stable lives.
Better designed public areas, better healthcare
and more provision of bereavement support
all need to be tackled, the report says.

Help the Aged spokesman Paul Bates:
"Many older people interact only with
their postman on a day-to-day basis.
A million people responded to our survey to say
that they are often or always lonely, and 1.5
million older people say they don't look forward to Christmas.
And in previous research we've done, 48% of people
said the television was their main form of company.
Loneliness may not seem a massive problem to many people,
but if you are an older person who literally does
not see a single, other human being for an entire week,
you are more prone to depression, you are going
to need higher levels of social care and the cost
to the tax payer is pretty significant."

The charity calls on ministers and local government
to consider the impact on older people of
the closure of services and the slashing of public transport.

The government could ensure cultural opportunities
are funded for older people as well as other age groups.

Mr Bates: "We want to make sure older people can
remain active in their communities, whether it's
through work, volunteering, taking part in classes
to learn new activities or intergenerational programmes with children.

The charity launches its annual fundraising campaign
"1 Is The Saddest Number",
and aims to provide 25,000 older people with a Christmas meal
with friends at a local day centre during the festive period.

Mr Bates urges people to take a few minutes
to check on older neighbours, relatives or friends.
It could "make all the difference".

Just drop us an email to let us know...
what you think.

Our funding comes from many donors + grants
from the public sector, but if you would like to
send some cash that would be great and would
help us a lot.

Are you a member of Rhondda Records ?
Are you a member of The Penrhys Boilerhouse Project ?
Would you like to be ?
It only takes a few pounds for a year's membership!
What you will get for a year's membership is:

1. 25% off the price of the tickets per event.
2. A monthly email telling you about
all coming events, projects, updates, services, etc....

All donations + Funds will support the work of
Rhondda Records' Boilerhouse Community Project,
working in the South Wales valleys, providing
life-long opportunities for the Rhondda Valleys.

Summary:

After going from house to house with the questionnaire
we have come to the conclusion that the people of Penrhys
are fully behind the plan to regenerate the boilerhouse.
The majority of people believe that the boilerhouse
should concentrate upon serving the needs of children
and young people, and from the completed questionaires
you can see that there is a need for a gym and sporting
facilties for those who are active and concerned with
health and fitness. People feel that the boilerhouse
is more than capable of replacing the old community
centre which was closed down two years ago due to health
and safety reasons. They believe that it should be
a centre that is inclusive and at the heart of the community.

Although the majority of people are behind the plan
to regenerate the boilerhouse it is important to point
out that there are some concerns which are not noted
on the questionaire sheets, such as the location and
the road nearby which is regarded as being a little
dangerous. There have been some suggestions from community
members that maybe the old infant school would be
an even better place for such a community project.

Overall the people of Penrhys are excited about
the prospect of there being an independent centre
that is fully concerned with serving the entire community
and would relish the thought of this becoming a reality!!!

All the best to Penrhys - we deserve nothing less !
